United Way as a Solutions Provider

While the most visible work that United Way does involves our annual appeal for funds and volunteer distribution system, United Way of Rutland County does much more.

Annual Letter Carrier's Food Drive: United Way serves as the coordinator between The Letter Carriers Union #495 and the community food shelves at BROC, The Salvation Army and The Community Cupboard to raise over 25,000 pounds of food for needy Rutland residents. The food drive takes place every May at the Rutland City Post Office. This year will be our 13th annual community food drive.

Boost America: Through a program of the United Way of America, United Way works with the Regional Ambulance Service and the Rutland County Sheriff's department to distribute free booster seats to income eligible families.

Community Needs Assessment: United Way staff and volunteers helped the James T Bowse Community Health Trust complete a Community Needs Assessment on the Rutland Region. The information will help guide the United Way allocations process to ensure that the services most essential are funded first.

Community Solutions Provider: When problems arise in our communities, United Way of Rutland County is right there at the table with local community leaders working to find solutions to better meet the needs of our communities.

Really Big Show: Through the support and leadership of Chittenden Bank Employees and United Way our community benefits from the annual Really Big Show, a community night of talent at The Paramount Theatre. This amateur talent show, put on as a benefit to United Way of Rutland County, allows talented individuals in our community to perform at one of the nations most beautiful venues.

Youth and Adult Education: Through the generosity of IBM and the work of United Way of Rutland County, 10 new IBM Young Explorers were brought to youth centers in our communities. Educating 3-6 year old children by working with computers in their curriculum, IBM is ensuring that children have the best educational tools available for growth and development. Recipient agencies include Rutland Headstart, Northwest School, Vermont Achievement Center, Rutland County Parent/Child Center and the Dana Recreation Center. Through the support of The Verizon Foundation and organization of United Way, computer education training classes are offered free to employees of non-profit agencies in the Rutland community.
